I have been getting a lot of emails regarding school supplies and the best way to stock up with out spending a lot of money or going to ten different stores. So here it is, my best back to school savings tip if you want to save money and be efficient with your time.
Use the price matching policies at Wal Mart or Target to get the lowest price on all the supplies you need in one stop.
- Gather all your weekly store ads (Walgreens, CVS, Target, K Mart, Staples, Office Depot, etc)
- Grab a marker and circle the best deals on the supplies you need.
- Make a list
- Head to the closest Wal Mart or Target with your list and you circulars.
- Gather all the supplies you want, go to the customer service desk, show them your circled deals and they will price match them all for you. You just got the best deals available for the lowest price possible-in one stop!
You should know that the products will probably have to be name brand, for example Crayola, for either store to match. So, you may be able to get better deals on store brands other places but, if you are looking to be efficient this is the way to go.
You still have a few weeks worth of ads before school starts so I would start this process now and make one trip a week until you have everything you need.
Just a quick example but, if you still have all your ads from this week you could circle:
Target
Crayola colored pencils (12 pk)-$0.99
Elmer’s glue sticks (2 pk)- $.0.20
K Mart
Crayola crayons (24)- $.89
Paper Mate gel pens (2pk)- $.99
Walgreens
Paper Mate mechanical pencils (5pk)-$0.19
Paper Mate pens (10 pk)-$0.19
Bic highlighters (8pk)-$0.49
Scotch transparent tape-$0.39
Office Depot
Paper Mate pens (12 pk)- $0.25
Paper Mate erasers (3pk)-$.99
Staples
Expo Markers (4 pk)- $1
Take all of them to Target or Wal Mart and get some good deals in one trip. If you do not have your ads from this week just get ready, on Sunday we can all plan a strategy and share our ideas for efficient back to school savings!

Katie – Wal Mart's Crayola Crayon 24 pack are $.30!!! I thought this was a great deal!!!
I have to say, if you are into shopping at CVS you can get a bunch of school supplies for free. This started 2 weeks ago and is going on for at least the next 2 weeks that I know of. I've managed to get DSS pencils, pens, scissors, tape, glue, composition books etc for free by using Extra Care Bucks (ECB) I already had and getting ECBs back. Definitely worth checking into.
Don't forget Tax Free Days In TN are Aug 7-9, 2009! Good for school supplies, clothing, shoes, computers.
Thanks for mentioning tax free weekend. I'll post more details next week but it is always great to plan ahead!
