Our Frugal Kindergarten Letter of The Week Activity

As most of you know homeschool is in full swing around here!

Today I decided to not care how messy my kitchen and chairs  became and just let the boys have some fun while working on their letter of the week.

We made our own dough (which was  lesson in numbers, math and cooperation.)  It is a simple recipe:

1 cup salt

2 cups flour

1 cup water (I added a little green food coloring just for fun)

Slowly add water to flour and salt. Knead for 7-10 minutes. (ours took every bit of 10 minutes)

I taught them how to roll the dough between their hands to get “strings” that they could then shape into letters. It was a different way to help them think through their letter and letter sounds. They each spelled their names and then I would make a letter sound and they would sculpt the letter.  It definitely kept my busy boys engaged longer than most of our phonics lessons.

I also learned something- if you do not have time to give your one year old a bath after making salt dough you probably should not let them “help”.

This is R- our letter of the week.
