Homemade Christmas Gift Experiment 2011

This Christmas my older sister and I are starting an experiment- homemade Christmas gifts.  You see, she has four daughters and soon I will have four sons-that is a lot of gifts!

We were having a hard time coming up with present suggestions this year.  Then we decided they do not need anymore toys than the grandparents are already planning to buy.

So, we decided to start a tradition. A tradition of making gifts. I think it will be fun to watch the presents grow and change over the years. (Hopefully for my nieces’ sakes THE HUSBAND will teach the boys some of his woodworking/building skills. They could eventually end up with some great presents!)

It was fun to sit and talk to the boys about what they thought the girls might like. They came up with some pretty funny ideas. My two favorites- buying them a pony or catching them a frog.

I decided to start off slowly. I mean, the boys are 5, 4 and 1 plus I am not the craftiest person you are going to meet. The plan is to make the girls no-knit scarves and no sew drawstring bags.

I will definitely keep you all posted on our progress. I have bought some of the yarn for the scarves so we are on our way!

Those are my ideas, I would love to hear what you are making this Christmas season! Feel free to share your past crafts or future plans- it will be great for inspiration! If this experiment goes well we will have many years in the future we will need ideas for.  Here is a the post and pictures of the craft we tried last year– the old standby Cinnamon Ornaments.  You can sort of see them hanging on our tree from last year.

  1. You should check out this site: http://www.sewmamasew.com  Each November they do a “handmade Holidays” where they have a different project or set of projects around a theme.  They post these daily and have been for at least 3 or 4 years, so there are TONS of ideas there.  There are plenty of projects that are low sew or no sew.
