Save Money By Using the Right Amount of Shampoo

cosmo-hair-chart

According to Cosmo, I use way too much shampoo.  I am not sure why I started wondering how much shampoo you should use,  but yesterday I did.  So I grabbed my phone. “OK Google, how much shampoo should you use?”  Up popped this super helpful chart from Cosmopolitan magazine. It shows how much of all types of hair products you should be using.

I learned I am using way too much shampoo and not enough mousse. Who knew? I am going through my shampoo twice as fast as I need to be.

How about you?  What are you using too much/ not enough of?  Check out the chart.

Whole30 on a Budget: 7 Ways I’m Saving Money And Doing Whole30

whole-30-la-croix

I posted a pic of me trying to fall in love with La Croix water and asked for advice.  While I received tons of great ideas I also got a lot of questions about how to do Whole30 on a budget.

I am 15 days in and here is what I have learned about staying Whole30 compliant AND saving some money.

1.  I started shopping at  ALDI.  For produce, organic meats and organic nuts, spices, eggs etc. ALDI has had the best prices by far.  It is a little out of the way for me but I make it buy about once a week.  You could also price match ALDI at  Walmart.

Screen Shot 2016-07-19 at 8.04.04 PM

2.  I still use the Buy Ahead Principle. When something you know you will use is on a great sale or/and you have a coupon stock up!  I stocked up on olive and coconut oil from Vitacost.com  before starting. They have  great prices, frequent sales and usually Free shipping on their brand.   (By the way if you are new to Vitacost and click thru this link you’ll get a free $10 credit!)

RXBar3.  I have price alerts set up on Amazon. Compliant Larabars and RX bars are about the Only way I have survived thus far.  So I set up a price alert for when they go on any kind of sale.

4.  I menu plan like a crazy woman It is a major step up from my former minimalist planning. Now all the produce and meat that makes its way into our house is planned for, so it does not go bad before I use it.

target-organic-beef-coupon-katie

5. I have scored some surprisingly Great deals on organic and natural meats at Target.  Who knew?  If I hit my target at just the right time they have marked down meats considerably.  Like today for example, organic grass fed beef for $4.99/lb.  It was on sale for $7.99, then they had $3 off coupons attached.

6.  I don’t buy everything organic. I buy what I can and what is on sale or close in price to non organic. If the organic alternative is not on sale or just too much I buy the best I can and don’t worry about it. 🙂

7.  I buy a lot less “stuff”.  Shopping just the outside aisles you buy a lot less other stuff. No creamer, no chips, no crackers, no cheese sticks, no yogurt, no honey, no tortillas…. you get the point. 🙂  This diet cuts out a lot of our regular items and that frees up some room in the budget.

This is how I am making Whole30 happen in our house.  If you are or have been on it what are you best money saving ideas? I would love to hear them!

My Best Tip to Save Money on Sports Drinks

Gatorade

Reader question:  Do you buy sports drinks like Gatorade and Powerade? If so, how do you save on them?

A few years ago I would have said no, we don’t spend money on sports drinks, we drink water. Now, while I still am a big fan of making my kiddos drink water, we buy sports drinks. The older two boys are more into sports and in this heat they sweat- a lot. 🙂

Here are a few ideas on saving when buying sports drinks:

  • Stock up when they are on sale. I know this seems basic but the beginning of summer is a great time to stock up, these are on sale almost everywhere!
  • Do not buy them at gas stations/convenience stores. These are always more expensive. Even if they are not on sale at your grocery store they will still be a better deal than the gas station!
  • My number one sure to save you money tip: Buy Gatorade or Powerade Powder and mix your own!

I learned this tip from my brother and sister-in-law last year at the beach. We had 13 kids to keep hydrated so this was a genius idea on their part.

I have seen this powder at Target and Kroger, you can probably find it at almost any grocery store or on Amazon.com. I just mix it with water then pour it in their reusable water bottles. It is super easy and much less expensive.

Powerade-powder
For example, this week Kroger had Powerade mix on sale for $2.99 (reg. $3.99). The canister I bought makes 2.5 gallons of Powerade, that is 320 ounces.  So I did a quick comparison to see how much I was saving.

I substituted Gatorade for this because it is what is on sale this week. Here is how it breaks down:

Kroger has six packs of  20 oz bottles of Gatorade on sale for $3.49 with coupon. That is 58 cents a bottle. (a GREAT deal when you compare this to $1.58 at my Weigels!)

With the mix I can make 16 20oz bottles, that is 18 cents a bottle!

I usually have a pitcher of this mixed and in the fridge. It is ideal for a house full of boys/friends/neighbors etc.
