Four Summer Reading Programs=Free Books, Free Smokies Tickets & More

Time to get ready for all the fun summer reading programs going on around town. Get your logs and journals printed out now to get your kids excited. These programs are great-they keep the kids reading and they offer a lot of frugal family fun.

Tennessee Smokies

If you live in the Knoxville area this is a program that you will want to check out. The Tennessee Smokies Summer Reading Program is for Smokies fans 12-and-under.

There are five levels of participation that are to be completed by each child participating. To complete a level all your child has to do is read 10 books, 10 chapters, or have 10 books read to him/her (if your child is not reading yet). Once your child has completed his/her first level, bring the Level 1 reading program form to the ticket office at Smokies Park, and exchange it for prizes and free tickets to a Smokies game. We did this last summer and it was great! Here are the rest of the details:

LEVEL 1 – The Single: Two Smokies tickets, a Shoney’s bookmark and an Amica Insurance pencil!

LEVEL 2 – The Double: Two Smokies tickets and a Shoney’s pencil!

LEVEL 3 – The Triple: Two Smokies tickets and a Shoney’s eraser!

LEVEL 4 – The Home Run – Two Smokies tickets, a Smokies card set and a FREE Shoney’s dessert!

LEVEL 5 – The Grand Slam: Two tickets to our August 10 picnic here at Smokies Park, a ticket to the Knoxville Zoo and a voucher for a Shoney’s Healthy Kids Meal! NOTE: Level 5 forms must be turned in by August 3rd.

Barnes & Noble

Barnes & Noble also has a Summer Reading Program.

This on is open to children in grades 1-6. Your child will read 8 books and record them in their reading journal. Then, from May 24 to September 6, 2011 when they turn their journal in at a Barnes & Noble store they will get to pick out a free book!

Border’s Double Dog Dare program: This program is for children 12 or younger, it does not give a minimum age. Kids read any 10 books , fill out the Double-Dog Dare you form with the books they read, and take it into any Borders to receive a Free book. No purchase is necessary, just make sure you return your form from 6/11/11-9/5/11.

Knox County Library: Summer Library Club Rewards

This is one of my favorite reading programs. My guys are still young enough to snuggle me on the couch while we read. Last year they loved circling the pictures on their charts.

1. Register as a Reader or a Listener online or at any library location. Readers read for 15 hours. Listeners (for those not quite reading yet) listen to 30 books being read to them.

2. Pick up a reading log at any Library location, or download one (for Readers or for Listeners).

3. Read!

4. Take your completed log back to the Library to pick up your great prize!

And don’t forget to visit the Library. They have great free programs all summer long. Check the Lirbrary’s event calendar for a complete schedule, or pick up a summer Off the Shelf at any Library location.

Katie, you rock!!  I hope as many children as possible register for these events. Spreading the word through your website is awesome. I also included all four places in our end of the year school newsletter last week as Reading Services mom. Great minds think alike 🙂

  2. claiborne county also has a reading program like knoxville does, & they have weekly programs for the kids to watch on tuesday mornings.

Don’t forget the Festival of Reading on Saturday!
