Saving on Meat and Produce – Answering a Reader’s Question

farmersmarketI received this question from a visitor and thought others might have this question also:

Do you have any suggestions on buying meats and produce?  I’m new to the world of coupons but so far have not seen anything for items like this and it seems like this is where I spend most of my grocery money.  I am 7 months pregnant, so I’m trying to eat as healthy as possible and use fresh ingredients when  I cook, but would also like to get an handle on spending wisely before the baby comes. Any suggestions?

If you are a Kroger shopper, then always look for the marked down managers special produce.

They mark down the produce that is about to expire (meaning that the “Sell By” is close at hand…not that the produce itself has ‘expired’).

I usually go late on Monday  mornings when this is happening.

If you find some produce that is going to expire soon ask the clerk that is in that section. They will often mark it down or tell you when they are going to do mark it down.

The same goes for meat. And if you freeze it by the sell by date it is fine until you need it!

The farmer’s markets, especially the one at New Harvest park, are great for produce.

If you have a big freezer buying fruit in season and freezing is a great way to save.
Often buying in bulk at a Sam’s club can get you a good deal on meat but I tend to buy a lot of other stuff while I am there so I try to avoid that. I watch for sales and stock up then. You might also consider ground turkey. We like it just as well as ground beef (it soaks up spices better) it is lean and often it is on sale. We also eat a lot of beans around here, a great, inexpensive way to get protein.

Hope this helps.

Any other suggetions for saving on meat and produce and healthy eating?
